A Top-5 Debut for "Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin."

The faith-based biopic performs well despite facing two big-budget films that also opened this weekend.

Angel Studios showed some real courage releasing Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. on the same day as Gladiator II and Wicked, which between them scooped up a massive $170 million over the weekend. The Christian film was nowhere near that kind of revenue, not surprisingly, bringing in an estimated $5.1 million, according to The Numbers website.

That is still a good performance for a picture based on a historical figure from World War II era Nazi Germany, and it puts it in fourth place overall at the box office from Friday through Sunday.

Bonhoeffer, of course, was a German pastor, and one of tremendous conviction and courage. He stood in open defiance of Hitler and his henchmen in an effort to save Jews from the murderous National Socialist regime, ultimately losing his own life by execution just weeks before the end of the war.
