The Biblical drama is currently among the most popular shows streaming on Prime Video.

That did not take long. House of David is only six episodes into its eight-episode first season and it has already gotten the green light for Season 2. The news does not, however, come as a surprise since the series is the second most popular program on Amazon's streaming platform in the United States, as we previously reported.

The production, from top Christian filmmaker Jon Erwin and his Wonder Project company in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, tells the story of ancient Israel's King David, closely following the Biblical narrative. Starring Egyptian American actor Michael Iskander in the lead role, the first season tracks David's journey from shepherd boy to the court of King Saul, where he uses his musical gifts to soothe the monarch after he loses God's favor.

In less than three weeks, Season 1 has already garnered 22 million viewers. Erwin, who has faith-based hits to his credit like Jesus Revolution and I Can Only Imagine, took to social media this week to break the news about the next season, citing the show's impressive performance thus far as the obvious reason.

"The show has been overwhelmingly successful and that's why we are able to make a second season."

He shot the social media clip on location in Greece, where he and his team are already in production on Season 2. According to a press release from Prime Video, that next season will focus on "the aftermath of the battle between David and Goliath" and follow David's continuing rise to the throne, as he deals with "palace politics, his family’s jealousy, and a growing romance."

No word yet on when Season 2 will roll out, though Christian Film Blog feels confident that next year is likely. In the meantime, the final two episodes of Season 1 are still to release - Episode 7 on March 27th and Episode 8 on April 3rd - and they will lead up to and include David's famous battle with the Philistine giant Goliath.
