The Christian film also sees a corresponding fall in box office revenue over the weekend.
The theater count for Breakthrough fell to 551 from 1,375 a week ago and the film only managed to bring in $377,000, according The Numbers. That makes this the first weekend it's earned less than a million dollars and it puts the picture outside of the top 15 for the first time since it debuted 5 1/2 weeks ago.
The movie, from Christian producer DeVon Franklin, has enjoyed a successful run so far, taking in almost $40 million domestically, which makes it the 14th highest earner all time in the Christian genre, according to a list compiled by Box Office Mojo. It needs about $1 million more to move past another Franklin-produced film - The Star - and it may well be able to achieve that before it finishes its theatrical run.
Breakthrough tells the true story of a Missouri boy who drowned in an icy lake and was brought back to life through the power of prayer. It has a strong cast, including Chrissy Metz, Topher Grace, Josh Lucas, Marcel Ruiz and Mike Colter. The soundtrack is impressive as well: it features four Grammy-winning performers, including Christian rapper Lecrae and country music star Carrie Underwood.
