The Christian movie producer lands the rights to the story behind the hit song from singer/songwriter Cory Asbury.
DeVon Franklin is a heavy-hitter in the Christian movie genre, with producer credits like Breakthrough, The Star and Miracles from Heaven on his resume. Now he and Paramount Pictures will help bring the true story of one of the headline names in Christian music to the big screen.
After years of trying, Franklin finally convinced Cory Asbury to let him make a movie about the musician's smash hit Reckless Love. That ballad spent 18 weeks at the top of the chart of Billboard's Hot Christian Songs back in 2018 and has been streamed 300 million times, according to Deadline, the publication that broke this story.
In a social media post, Asbury states he resisted Franklin's overtures for two years, saying about the song's success that he "didn't want to 'milk it' for all it was worth," and adding that he thought making a movie might be "exploitative" by "taking advantage of a song God had freely given me."
And then there was the issue of Asbury's personal life and his relationship with his earthly father, which is part of the overall story. It is a relationship that, though now improved, was at times unloving during his childhood. But Franklin, who is also a preacher, told the singer something that ultimately changed his mind.
"Cory, what if this film is bigger than you and your story? What if it brings healing to your dad and dads all across the world?"
There are no details yet on casting or a production schedule, let alone the release date. The screenplay, however, will be written by J. Mills Goodloe, the writer of Age of Adeline and Everything, Everything, and Christian Film Blog will keep you abreast of developments as we get them.
In the meantime, we encourage you to read that social media post from Cory Asbury. It is both elucidating and thoughtfully written and you can find it via this link to his Instagram account.
