The Kendrick Brothers' latest faith-based film has international moviegoers to thank for a quarter of its total revenue.
It is no secret that international markets have become more and more important to the American movie business over the years, with some films generating half or more of their total box office haul overseas. Alas, Christian movies, as a rule, do not translate nearly as well beyond U.S. borders as their secular counterparts.
The Forge, however, is bucking that trend: it has thus far captured 25.5% of its overall theatrical revenue outside of America. That overall number, by the way, is $38.9 million, according to Box Office Mojo, which is a strong performance considering the picture had an estimated production budget of just $5 million. As a point of reference for the size of the foreign portion, the brothers' previous film, Overcomer, earned just 8.6% of its total revenue overseas.
Now then, the aforementioned 25% of that global total this time around equates to $9.9 million, of which a disproportionately large chunk was generated in Brazil: nearly $7.8 million! We have previously reported about the success Kendrick Brothers' movies have enjoyed in that South American nation, but this performance is nearly four times as good as the numbers their other films turned in.
In fact, a recent social media post from director Alex Kendrick - who with his younger brother Stephen makes up the Kendrick Brothers filmmaking duo - stated that 2.5 million Brazilians have seen The Forge since it released in that country in late September. The former pastor also expressed his gratitude to the Lord, adding "Praise God" at the end of his missive. (The aforementioned Overcomer, by way of comparison, was watched by some 700,000 moviegoers there in 2019.)
The Forge, which stars Karen Abercrombie, Priscilla Shirer, and Cameron Arnett, has earned almost $29 million of its overall revenue in North America, but is now showing in fewer than 100 theaters after 69 days in release. If you cannot find it at a location in your area, it is also available on home entertainment.
