The most recent movies from the Kendrick Brothers and the Erwin Brothers are in the running for a trophy at the 51st Annual Gospel Music Association Awards show.
Not surprisingly, the Dove Awards are virtually all about Christian music - not movies - since the event is put on by the Gospel Music Association. But in the three dozen-plus categories for singers, songwriters, music producers, et cetera, there is the Inspirational Film of the Year Award.
Among the entrants this time around are Overcomer from Alex and Stephen Kendrick and I Still Believe from Jon and Andrew Erwin. The former picture was the second biggest box office draw in 2019 among faith-based films (Breakthrough took top box office honors, and also won last year's Dove Award in this category) and the latter raced out to first place at the box office on opening night earlier this year...only to have it's theatrical run cut short because of the coronavirus-induced closure of American movie theaters.
Both films are well-done and worthy of winning at this year's Dove Awards show, but they are not alone in the running. Three other pictures join them in the Inspirational Film of the Year category: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, and The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel.
There will be no live event this year because of the pandemic, so the Dove Awards show will instead feature pre-recorded performances and acceptance speeches, and the program will air on the Trinity Broadcasting Network on October 30, 2020.
