The Christian movie from the Kendrick Brothers performs well at the box office as we head into Labor Day.
Overcomer brought in $5.65 million from Friday through Sunday, according to The Numbers, putting it in fifth place overall. That brings its total revenue after 10 days in release to $17.2 million, which is already good enough for a spot inside the Top-25 all-time in the Christian genre. And Box Office Mojo, the keepers of that list, is projecting the film will do $2.1 million more on Labor Day.
This is the most anticipated Christian movie of the year and it's doing what most observers expected it to do. Nevertheless, with a budget of just $5 million, filmmakers Stephen Kendrick and Alex Kendrick - together with their partners at Sony's Affirm Films - must be pleased with the picture's performance.
Co-written by Stephen and Alex, and directed by Alex, Overcomer tells a story of finding our identity in Christ and features a strong cast of Christian actors, including Priscilla Shirer, Cameron Arnett, Shari Rigby, Aryn Wright-Thompson and - yet again - Alex Kendrick. The soundtrack also has some star power, featuring Christian singers Lauren Daigle and Mandisa.
