The streaming series about Israel's King David is among the most popular productions currently on Amazon's Prime Video.

An auspicious beginning for the Biblical drama House of David: it has already climbed to number two in Prime Video's Top-10 in the United States, right behind the new season of the detective show Reacher. The series about ancient Israel's greatest king is the first production from Wonder Project, the new independent studio founded by Christian filmmaker Jon Erwin - the creator of the show, which he co-directs with partner Jon Gunn, also a Believer.

The streaming platform released the first three of eight total episodes last Thursday, and it plans to roll out one per week each Thursday from now through April 3rd. The program focuses on David's rise from obscurity, beginning with his days as a shepherd boy at his family's homestead in Bethlehem. Egyptian-born American actor Michael Iskander portrays the future monarch, and he is joined by a strong supporting cast that includes native New Yorker Stephen Lang as the prophet Samuel and, in the part of King Saul, Ali Sulieman, who was born in Nazareth of all places.

Not only is this show streaming on Amazon's Prime Video platform, but Wonder Project teamed up Amazon MGM Studios to produce it, and you can instantly see that that outfit poured significant resources into the project. It was shot on location in Greece and the backdrops are phenomenal, as are the cinematography, sets and costumes, all lending a striking sense of realism to what you see on screen, as the trailer below makes clear.

This eight-episode season is to end with David's famous clash with the Philistine giant Goliath, meaning it will cover but a fraction of his life. There is no word yet on a possible second season, but Christian Film Blog will hazard a guess that the success the show has enjoyed a few days and three episodes into its release is cause for optimism that audiences will be in store for more of this production about the man after God's own heart.
