This faith-based miniseries about a young George Washington is back in production and picks up some star power from the world of contemporary Christian music.

After a lengthy fund-raising induced hiatus following the pilot episode's release in 2019, cast and crew of Washington's Armor are filming again in Texas. Miniseries creator and director Tammy Lane has reassembled her team at Capernaum Studios near the town of Weatherford, west of Fort Worth, to shoot the remaining five episodes of the show, which is based on George Washington's own journals.

The series tells the story of the future first president's service to the British Crown as a loyal colonial subject and the twists and turns that helped make him the leader of the American Revolution. Being that this is a faith-based endeavor, it also focuses on the role that divine providence played in the process.

Among those now in the cast is Christian music star Michael W. Smith, who has turned more attention to acting the last few years, playing parts in faith-based movies like Beautifully Broken (2018), We Three Kings (2020) and the yet to be released Pardoned by Grace. While we don't have many details about his latest role, we do know he will play a military officer named Colonel Innes in this production.

In a behind-the-scenes video about the show, Lane says she got a call in December in which Smith expressed interest in taking part in the project. Having been a big fan of his since very early in her walk of Faith, she felt it was a "Christmas gift from the Lord."

"It's really special because when I first became a Christian, I didn't really know that there was Christian music. And so then I discovered him and his music and it really helped me in my walk with the Lord."

Smith, who has been a star on the Christian music scene since the 1980s, and had a massive hit just last year with Way Maker, was eager to join this production, saying in the aforementioned video that he's sure it's "going to be fun" to be a part of it.

"I'm excited, I really am. This is a story that's probably needed to be told for a long, long time."

The character of George Washington is played by Texas-based actor Willie Mellina and he is joined in the cast by top-notch players like Timothy Perez-Ross and Micah Lynn Hanson, who was one of the stars in our recent Yuletide feature, Miracle on Christmas. The pilot episode of Washington's Armor, which came out in limited release in 2019, is very well done and you can read our full review here.

No word yet on when production will wrap, let alone when or where we can expect to see the full miniseries. Christian Film Blog will keep you abreast of developments as warranted and, in the meantime, check out that video with Tammy Lane and Michael W. Smith.
