This adaptation of a Francine Rivers' novel does, however, see a significant drop in revenue from a week ago.
The Christian romance picture delivered $1.76 million at the box office from Friday through Sunday, according to The Numbers website, putting it in fourth place overall for the second consecutive weekend. Revenue dropped significantly from its debut last week, however, down 50% despite a slight jump in the theater count: that went up from 1,903 venues to 1,963.
Based on Francine Rivers' 1990s bestseller, Redeeming Love is loosely inspired by the Old Testament book of Hosea. Set in Gold-Rush era California, it stars Abigail Cowen as a woman who was sold into prostitution as a child and ultimately falls for a young man who loves her deeply nonetheless.
The movie has faced some sharp criticism among Christian publications like The Christian Post and Movieguide for the graphic nature of the story and on-screen imagery, and Christian Film Blog has elected not to watch it, as we mentioned in a previous article.
