Based on a successful children's book series by the same name, The Dead Sea Squirrels is now rolling out as a streaming series. From Mike Nawrocki of VeggieTales fame, this new show uses a pair of revivified squirrels from the time of Christ to help teach Biblical truths from "the life and ministry of Jesus while keeping things fun and engaging for kids," as the program's creator puts it.

In an interview with The Christian Post, Nawrocki shared insights into the series, which he has been considering since his VeggieTales days back in the 1990s. That now billion-dollar franchise features him as the voice of Larry the Cucumber and is the product of his joint efforts with fellow Believer Phil Vischer. Nawrocki first brought The Dead Sea Squirrels to the public in 2019 in a 12-book early-reader series that forms the basis of the coming show.

"I just wanted an opportunity to tell more New Testament stories to kids in a really fun way."

He does that through the aforementioned squirrels, Merle and Pearl, who are discovered at the Dead Sea in a petrified state. Once brought back to life, they proceed to share Biblical insights and wisdom with the boy who found them, using plenty of humor in the process. The goal of the show, according to Nawrocki, is to "delve deeper into the ministry of Jesus."

"I hope that kids will fall in love with Merle and Pearl, that they will care about what they say, and that they learn key Biblical lessons. Most of all, I want them to know that God made them special and loves them very much."

The Dead Sea Squirrels will consist of 13 episodes and release tomorrow, February 14th, on Minno, a Christian streaming platform for children. You can sign up for a free trial of that service via this link to its website, and the trailer below will give you a better sense for what to expect from the series.
