It has been a long time coming, but the first season of The Dead Sea Squirrels is scheduled to debut next month. Created by Mike Nawrocki, co-creator of the popular VeggieTales franchise, this new show is based on his bestselling book series by the same name; it features a pair of squirrels - Merle and Pearl - that have been brought back to life after 2,000 years of petrification in a cave at the Dead Sea in the Holy Land.

Once revivified, "they love sharing the lessons they learned first-hand from Jesus' teachings in their own nutty way," as a synopsis puts it, and they do so with the boy who found them during an archeological dig. Characters will be voiced by Nawrocki, previously the voice of Larry the Cucumber in VeggieTales, and his co-creator of that production, Phil Vischer, among others. Top acts from Christian music will help with songs, including Matthew West, MercyMe's Bart Millard, and Ellie Holcombe.

In a press release, Nawrocki shares that since he last worked on VeggieTales a decade ago, "it's been a dream to create another fun, faith-filled series for families." He and his partners on this project - animator Tom Bancroft and producer Steve Taylor - have been working on it since early 2021, as Christian Film Blog wrote at the time, when they launched a crowdfunding campaign. Now that it is ready, Nawrocki has lofty expectations.

"The Dead Sea Squirrels builds on the VeggieTales legacy by introducing a new cast of characters to this generation of kids and families."

The streaming platform Minno, which bills itself as "the # 1 source of Christian content for kids and families," will be the exclusive outlet for The Dead Sea Squirrels, and the show will release there on February 14th. That is a subscription-based platform, and you can find out about a free trial via this link to their website. In the meantime, check out the show's trailer below.
