Tension builds to a fever pitch in the fifth season of The Chosen, as the streaming series from Christian director Dallas Jenkins moves into Holy Week. The official trailer came out today and it gives a good sense of the drama coming in the next eight episodes of this hit show about the life of Christ, which has become something of a global phenomenon: it has gained 250 million viewers around the world since it premiered in 2019.

In the trailer, Jonathan Roumie - the American actor who portrays the Jesus character - throws down the gauntlet, as it were, playing out the famous confrontation from Scripture with the sellers and money changers in the Temple court in Jerusalem. As you will see, there is not only shouting - "My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of thieves" - but the overturning of tables, and the wielding of a whip. That's not all either, because the action at the Temple is interspersed with scenes of Roman troops engaged in fiery, nighttime battle.

The trailer kicks off with Judas's agreeing to betray Christ, and it ends with the fallen apostle as well, as he asks himself under his breath after the scene at the Temple: "What have you done?"

Somebody nailed the music in this one, too, having selected Johnny Cash's soulful rendition of the American folk classic God's Gonna Cut You Down. The song is interspersed throughout and its lyrics of a divine reckoning, acoustic guitar, and rhythmic clapping and foot stomping perfectly presaging what looms in the season to come.

As Christian Film Blog previously reported, Season 5 of The Chosen will release in theaters in three parts, the first of which debuts on March 28th, to be followed by Part Two on April 3rd and Part Three on April 10th.
