Tyler Perry to Produce Faith-Based Movies for Netflix

He is teaming up with fellow Christian producer DeVon Franklin on a multi-picture deal for the streaming service.

Netflix evidently recognizes the growing popularity of faith-based productions and is turning to big-time producer Tyler Perry to put more of them on its platform. The new agreement is an expansion of an existing partnership - signed in 2023 between the streamer and his Georgia-based Tyler Perry Studios - for both scripted and unscripted content.

A committed Believer, the 54-year-old Perry is best-known for his Madea comedy franchise in which he plays the irreverent lead character. He will be joined in this new endeavor by another Christian producer, DeVon Franklin, whose credits include faith-based films like Breakthrough, The Star, and Miracles from Heaven.

Their first joint project for Netflix will be an adaptation of the Old Testament story of Ruth and Boaz, who were the great grandparents of King David. This modern iteration of the story - entitled R & B - is set in the music scene of Tennessee and focuses on a woman who moves there from Atlanta to care for an elderly widow, finding the love of her life in the process.

Netflix has had success with faith-based music fare in the past, including A Week Away, which landed in the Top-10 most-watched list when it released on the platform back in 2021, as Christian Film Blog reported at the time. There is no word yet on when we can expect to see R & B, but we will bring you updates as we get them.
